What is now the Village of New Lenox was first settled in the late 1820's. New Lenox Township was established when Will County was created in 1852 with the building of the Rock Island Railroad between Chicago and Rock Island, Illinois. The Village of New Lenox wasn't officially created until October 4, 1946. New Lenox is located approximately 36 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The Village is about 10 square miles in area and is located in the center of New Lenox Township in the east central portion of Will County. The City of Joliet borders immediately to the west with the remainder of the Village surrounded by unincorporated Will County. The area currently known as Oak Forest was originally called Cooper's Grove in the 1800s. its proximity to nearby forest preserves and mature oak trees throughout and surrounding the area) is in an 1893 Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway timetable. Conviently Oak Forest is lovated only 22 miles south of downtown Chicago, and less than a half mile from I-57. Oak Forest is a community enriched with businesses of all kinds. Tinley Park, Illinois
The Village of Tinley Park, Illinois has been thriving and growing for more than a century. Permanent settlement in the area began in the 1830s. In 1853, The Village was officially established as, Bremen, a name that reflected the community's German roots. Commerce of all sorts thrived in the early days. Tradesmen, merchants, farmers, hotels and a progressive wind-driven mill and grain elevator helped. Located directly on the route of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroads lines, the community flourished with economic growth. The modern-day Village of Tinley Park owes its name to the railroad, as well. In 1890 Bremen changed its name to honor Samuel Tinley, Sr., the community's first railroad station agent. Over the years, Tinley Park has received recognition as the home of five Indianapolis 500 race car drivers including Melvin "Tony" Bettenhausen, his sons Gary, Merle and Tony, jr., and cousin Emil Andres.Tinley Park continues to commemorate its heritage in many ways. The area within the original 1892 municipal boundaries has been designated an historical district. Property owners are encouraged to preserve and restore the historic appearances of their edifices. The "Old Zion" Landmark Church houses the Tinley Park Historical Society and museum. The Village of Homer Glen is located just 11 miles southwest of Chicago in Will County, Illinois. The Village was incorporated in 2001. Homer Glen is bisected by three major creeks that are home to a multitude of wildlife such as beavers, coyotes, deer, and woodchucks. The gently rolling terrain is dotted with prairie grasses, stands of trees, and cultivated fields. Two 18-hole golf courses help the Village attain its rolling vista. A sizeable number of residents have horses on their property. The village is a unique blend of small farms, spacious developments, and open space. Founded in 1836, the area is rich in history and was once known as "Yankee Settlement". Within the corporate boundaries of Homer Glen are two square miles of Will County Forest Preserves. Messenger Woods Nature Preserve is one of Will County’s oldest and most unusual forest preserves. Visitors to the preserve can enjoy one of the few remaining forests in northeastern Illinois that have not been altered by grazing, cutting, farming, or development. Spring Creek Greenway is the Forest Preserve District's only equestrian preserve, offering horse riders a 3.2-mile trail that winds through wooded areas and prairie. In 1988, the Homer Township residents approved a referendum to purchase open space for recreational, environmental and educational uses. The Township maintains a number of athletic fields, as well as neighborhood parks. Their plans include turning a defunct farm into a working farm for the education and enjoyment of all the residents.
